Tell Justin Trudeau to stop oil and gas companies from exploiting Canadians at the pumps

British Columbians are struggling to keep up with rising gas prices, with many household budgets increasing $200–$300 per week.

Meanwhile, oil and gas companies are making historic profits as a result of high gas prices — and the public is paying the price.

Sonia Furstenau and the BC Greens have teamed up with other provincial green parties to persuade Justin Trudeau to introduce a “windfall tax” that would take back unfair oil and gas profits to provide immediate financial relief to Canadians.

Gas prices in most places in BC are hovering around $2.30 per litre and are forecast to hit $2.50 a litre this summer.

Increased gas prices disproportionately affect lower-income people. British Columbians need to get to work and get their kids to school. Transit simply isn’t accessible for many.

The cost of housing, groceries and medications is rising as well and it’s getting to a point where people have to choose between one or the other.

As British Columbians struggle to make ends meet, global oil companies are making historic profits. These profits aren’t adding much benefit to our provincial economy – they go right into the hands of oil executives.

Sonia Furstenau and the BC Greens have teamed up with the New Brunswick Greens and Prince Edward Island Greens to call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to implement a “windfall tax” that would claw back some of the profits oil companies are bringing in, with the proceeds returned to Canadians.

The government needs to do what’s right for Canadians, for British Columbians and for the climate.
