Premier Eby: Accelerate action on old growth

September 2023 marked the three-year anniversary of the Old Growth Strategic Review.

Although Premier David Eby promised to accelerate action almost a year ago, none of the recommendations have been implemented, and some of the most at-risk old growth forests are still being destroyed. Government has had almost 4 years to implement these recommendations, and these forests are running out of time.

With communities across BC experiencing so many dangerous impacts of the climate crisis first-hand, we do not have any more time to waste.

Please stand with us by signing the BC Greens petition, calling on Eby to act now to reduce community climate risks.

In 2020, the BC NDP promised to implement all 14 recommendations from the Old Growth Strategic Review.

The 2020 recommendations were tied to a three-year framework with the goal to have all implemented by 2023.

While Premier Eby took a step forward in announcing a $90M fund to support the forestry sector, and then again on February 15, 2023, to announce substantial changes to the forestry sector that First Nations and environmental groups have been calling for for decades, most at-risk old growth forests are still being clearcut in BC.

BC's 2023 wildfire season was the worst ever recorded. The wildfires and all of the other climate impacts our communities are facing (floods, droughts, landslides, heatwaves) show how important it for our government to fulfill its promises to protect old growth forests.

Sign the BC Greens petition to remind Eby to:

  • Accelerate action to fully implement the Old Growth Strategic Review Panel's 14 recommendations
  • Continue prioritizing working with First Nations and aligning all forest management with the principles of free, prior and informed consent
  • Incorporate the voices and insights of local communities into land use planning
